Cleveland’s two New Tech High Schools – New Tech @ Garrett Morgan and New Tech @ East Tech – will serve as national models on Thursday, April 14, at a regional New Tech Network Showcase event. More than 90 superintendents, principals, teachers and students from Ohio, Pennsylvania and Kentucky will be in Cleveland to discuss how to create a successful New Tech High School.
Under CMSD’s Academic Transformation Plan this year, New Tech @ East Tech and New Tech @ Garrett Morgan became the first Ohio schools to join the New Tech Network, a nationwide organization which supports high schools that stress a “project-based” curriculum.
Student teams at New Tech schools dissect problems and issues, with a teacher acting as a coach. The program started with 40 U.S. schools in 2009, expanded to about 65 schools this year and is expected to grow to more than 80 schools in 14 states by this fall. The educators in Cleveland this week are among those interested in opening New Tech schools in their districts. The New Tech organization provides bi-monthly training at New Tech schools and shares best practices through regular meetings, conferences and updates.
The educators will hear Christine Fowler-Mack, CMSD’s Chief of Staff, Thursday morning describe the process of successfully opening the two CMSD New Tech schools, thanks to grants from the Cleveland and Gund foundations. Jon Reinhard, director-Midwest Region, New Tech Network, will give an overview of the New Tech model. At 12:30 p.m. meeting participants will tour one of the Cleveland New Tech high schools and watch student demonstrations of the ECHO computer program which links all New Tech school students.
