Cleveland, Ohio-– The board of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District voted tonight to lay off 105 staff members. This includes 61 central office positions for a savings of $3.68 million a year.
The central office cuts include the layoff of 39 staff members and 22 vacant positions that will not be filled or replaced. These 61 layoffs are seven more for the central office than predicted at the April 5 board meeting.
Tonight’s layoffs also include secretaries, custodians, safety and security personnel and other union employees not voted on three weeks ago.
Tonight’s staff reductions, along with the April 5 decision to lay off 702 Cleveland Teacher Union employees and to close seven schools, were required to offset a projected $74 million deficit over the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years.
